Rye, NY 2008 - WWII hero Jack Vier spoke to a history class at Rye High School to share his war experiences with eleventh graders. During his time overseas, he said he participated in the Normandy invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of France. For his service, he earned three purple hearts, a silver star, a bronze star, a battlefield commission, and pieces of shrapnel still embedded in his hip. - Mike Roy / The Journal News
